Serious Money - by Caryl Churchill at Electric Theatre, Guildford -  this week

21st to 24th May - Electric Theatre, Guildford

Guildford School of Acting are presenting the 1987 play with final year Acting and Musical Theatre students.  It's a satirical play focussing on the trading floors of LIFFE - the London International Financial Futures Exchange.  It's gritty and has lots of bad language.  I've arranged and directed the two songs in the play.  Gari Jones directs.

Summer School at GSA Conservatoire

30th July to 11th August 2007 - Guildford

I've just finished working on a two-week Musical Theatre summer school hosted by GSA Conservatoire.  My group was made up of 17 students - and I worked with Caroline Sheen, Rosemary Ashe, Jill Francis and Gerry Tebbutt.  During the fortnight we covered Group Singing, individual singing tutorials, song presentation masterclasses and a thirty minute performance of "Novel Inspirations" - a selection of songs, dances and scenes compiled by Caroline Sheen.  Congratulations to the seventeen students who worked very hard and performed to a great standard in the performance on the final day.

Sweeney Todd - Bryn Terfel and Maria Friedman at the Royal Festival Hall

5th to 57th July 2007 - royal festival hall

The semi-staged production of Sondheim's masterpiece was a great success with wonderful performances from Bryn Terfel, Maria Friedman, Phillip Quast, Daniel Evans, Emma Williams, Daniel Boys and the rest of the cast.   I'm particularly proud of the ten GSA students that formed the ensemble.  They were a delight to work with - and we got endless praise for the quality of their performances.

Grand Hotel - Mountview Academy

Cameron Mackintosh studios, london

I've just finished working on the musical Grand Hotel at Mountview Academy with a talented cast of 2nd year studios.  With me were the wonderful director Sally-Ann Gritton and fabulous choreographer Cressida Carré.

Mephistopheles Smith - Richard O'Brien's hedonistic rock'n'roll masterpiece

May 2007 in Brighton; August 2007 in Edinburgh

The performances in Brighton have finished - and went down very well.  The talented and sexy cast (Tim Driesen, Lindsey Lauer and Claire Huckle) did a fantastic job.  The cast recording is now available.  The show is next being performed at Guilfest, Edinburgh Fringe Festival and then at venues in Reading, Guildford and Newbury.  See www.mephistophelessmith.co.uk for more details.  E-mail me if you'd like to buy the CD.

A New Musical - Gathering Storm

Hot of the press - I've been asked to MD a new musical called Gathering Storm - written for the MA course at GSA Conservatoire by composer Paul Kessell-Holland and lyricist Nicholas Scrivens.  Performances are taking place on 6th and 7th April, 2007 at Bellairs Playhouse, Guildford.

A Little Sondheim on the Side @ Haydon Studios, GSA Conservatoire

7th to 9th February 2007

A talented cast of 10 students from the GSA Conservatoire, in their third year on the Musical Theatre degree course, have just completed a short run of four performances of a Sondheim revue.  I compiled the show and created new vocal arrangements. The show was directed by Stewart Nicholls.

Four Unlikely Lovers @ Trafalgar Studios

22nd January 2007

The show - following the sell-out performance at Jermyn Street in December - was a great success!  The show almost sold out - not bad for a Monday night in January - and the superb cast (Kieran Brown, Nic Gibney, Lindsey Lauer and Penny Matthews) did me proud!

Four Unlikely Lovers @ Jermyn Street Theatre

17th December 2006

Dab Hand Productions - my production company - presented this revue of the wonderful songs of William Finn for one night only at Jermyn Street Theatre.  It was directed by Matt Byham and I provided the Musical Direction.  The cast were Nic Gibney, Nathaniel Keane, Lindsey Lauer and Penny Matthews.  The show was sold out and shortly after the show we were invited to perform the show again at Trafalgar Studios - part of the Ambassador Theatre Group.
